OpenCode FAQ

OpenCode is free to download and use. The current build is v1.18.31 for Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS, and Linux. You do not need a paid AI plan to start, though Copilot, ChatGPT Plus or Pro, and Claude Pro or Max can sign in. Windows Defender has flagged temp DLLs on some first runs; hash the file before you exclude anything.

OpenCode is an open source agent that helps you write and run code with any AI model. It is available as a terminal-based interface, desktop app, or IDE extension.

Install from the download page, run opencode in a project, then /init. The official intro is the longer path: connect a provider, ask with @ files, and use Plan/Build.

Not necessarily. OpenCode comes with free models you can use without creating an account. You can also create a Zen account for the curated coding-agent list, connect OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and others, or attach local models.

Yes. The official FAQ names Claude Pro/Max, ChatGPT Plus/Pro, and GitHub Copilot.

No. It is also a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus an IDE extension and a web client. The terminal is still the default install path.

OpenCode is 100% free to use and includes free models. Connecting another provider can add that provider's cost.

The homepage says OpenCode does not store your code or context data. The FAQ adds the exception: data is stored when you use the free models or create shareable links. Local sessions still live on disk under ~/.local/share/opencode or %USERPROFILE%\.local\share\opencode, including auth.json.

Yes. The source is public under the MIT License. Anyone can use, modify, or contribute. Issues and pull requests come from the community. This site does not deep-link out; the project name on GitHub is anomalyco/opencode.

Yes. Desktop publishes win-x64 and win-arm64 installers. The docs still recommend WSL for the better terminal and file-system path. Desktop needs WebView2. See the WSL guide.

Heuristic engines have labeled first-run temp DLLs as Wacatac or PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic. That is a known false-positive class, not a claim that every scan is wrong. Verify the SHA256, prefer the signed v1.18.31 desktop build, and do not switch off Smart App Control. Full steps: antivirus guide.

The official site has shipped desktop with tabs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Independent writeups in 2026 still called desktop younger than the TUI. Treat it as the newer surface: useful, and the one that needs WebView2 and a local CLI sidecar.

On Windows PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\opencode-desktop-win-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256. The v1.18.31 digest is on the integrity section.
